So you’re thinking energy healing, naturopathy or other alternative Eastern-inspired health trends right? If so, you’re association with the phrase isn’t quite right. Holistic Health promotes recognition of the ’whole’ person as four main pillars – physical, psychological, emotional, social.
Since the four pillars of Holistic health work as a system, it’s important to understand that being well in one pillar has positive flow on affects onto the others. Take relationships for example. Relationships are a social necessity that also boosts your mental health (psychological well-being) and lowers your blood pressure (physical well-being).
Likewise, being unwell in one pillar has negative flow on affects onto the other pillars. Take stress, a psychological response that causes muscle aches, headaches and affects sleep (physical ill-being) and leaves you feeling unhappy, irritable and withdrawn (emotional ill-being).
Holistic Health is about addressing all four pillars in unity as a system, with ‘wellness’ as the end goal – rather than the isolated resolution of an illness or condition.
