While most of us have become accustomed to wearing shoes throughout the majority of the day, humans are meant to walk barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, sand, and earth by design.
Walking barefoot has several benefits on the body’s biomechanics. Here are some reasons why being barefoot is super healthy for you.
Improves balance and proprioception
Proprioception refers to the sense of our body’s position and alignment. When we walk barefoot, the neurons in our feet send signals that help our brain understand our body’s position and movement, leading to better balance and posture.
Strengthens foot muscles
Wearing shoes all the time can weaken the muscles in our feet and toes as the shoes themselves provide the support. Walking barefoot activates these muscles, making them stronger and healthier.
Promotes proper alignment
When we wear shoes, we often adjust our gait to accommodate them, causing changes in our alignment that can lead to joint pain and posture problems. However, walking barefoot allows for proper alignment of the foot, ankle, and leg, reducing the risk of developing pain and discomfort.
Improves blood circulation
Walking barefoot allows for more blood flow to the feet, promoting better circulation throughout the body. Good circulation leads to better muscle function, improved mobility, and overall health benefits.
Lowers stress levels
Walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as sand or grass can be a grounding experience that helps lower stress levels. This grounding effect is thought to reduce inflammation in the body, which can also lower the risk of developing chronic illnesses.
Next time you have the opportunity, give your feet a break and walk barefoot. Your body will thank you!
