What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a manual technique used to treat movement dysfunction and it’s associated pain. The technique involves penetrating the skin with “dry” (without medication or injection), hair-thin, metal needles into taut, tense muscle tissue to induce a localised inflammatory response.
Once inserted, the practitioner palpates the needle to stimulate a so-called ‘muscle-twitch’ that triggers an expansion in the muscle fibers, thereby relaxing the muscle.
What is Acupuncture Therapy?
Unlike dry needling, Acupuncture therapy is based on ancient concepts founded within the broader study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
While it does involve penetration of dry, hair-thin, metal needles into the body, needle placement is not necessarily localised to the zone that requires care. Rather, the needles are placed at strategic points on the body to induce biochemical change. The “strategic points” specifically refer to acupressure points mapped along what are believed to be the body’s ‘meridian channels’.
This form of calculated needle placement is believed to target stimulation of specific nerves, muscles and connective tissue that regulate functioning of corresponding internal organs and trigger the body’s natural healing ability.
