What happens when your posture isn’t right during exercise?
- Overuse and strain of the larger superficial spinal muscles
- Poor activation and weakness of the deeper intrinsic spinal muscles.
- Excessive load and irritation to the passive spinal stabilisers (ligament and disc structures)
What does this mean?
Incorrect posture can result in pain, strain and even injury. Getting your posture exercise right can avoid this, as well as also enhancing your athletic ability
Ways you can improve or check your posture
- Research; know the correct posture before you start, seek reliable information from reputable sources
- Get verbal feedback from a friend/training partner
- Get visual feedback by filming your movements/lifts/poses/holds
- Get proprioceptive feedback by having someone/something manually correct your aberrant movement pattern as its happening (e.g. someone holding your hips)
- See your Chiropractor/Physio/Pilates Instructor and ask for a tailored spinal exercise routine to improve postural awareness
